First Place:
Shing Ann Yeh is a sophomore at Centennial High School. She began studying the cello at the age of eight with Donald Watts and currently works with Robert Newkirk. Last summer, Ann received the merit-based Emerson scholarship to the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. There, she studied with Astrid Schween and took a master class with Eric Kim.
Ann has been a principal cellist of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Maryland All-State Junior Orchestra, and is currently the principal cellist of the Howard County Gifted and Talented Orchestra. She had a solo performance at an Interlochen Cultivation Event in Washington, D.C., and played with the Prince George's County High School Honors Choir at the Kennedy Center.
Ann is also actively involved in chamber music. She is a member of the Centennial High School String Quartet and the Bransa Trio, which was featured on the Howard County television program titled "Arts a la Carte."
In addition to bringing music to senior centers and playing at her church, Ann loves to play soccer, bake, and spend quality time with her family. Ann is the Senior Division String winner of the Columbia Orchestra's 2009 Young Artist Competition.

The winners will perform with the orchestra at our concert on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Jim Rouse Theatre. All winners, alternates and honorable mentions receive two complementary tickets to the performance. Come hear the future of music in Howard County!
