The Columbia Orchestra bursts out in full color with Debussy’s impressionistic masterpiece! Jason Shafer, the Orchestra’s 2003 Young Artist Competition winner now playing in Florida’s New World Symphony, brings his virtuosity to one of Mozart’s last and most beautiful concertos. Begin the journey with a young African-American composer’s jazzy celebration of Detroit’s automotive history and its world-class orchestra.

Sounds of Praise
Sunday, November 7, 2010 - 5:00 p.m.
The Columbia Orchestra joins the Cathedral Choir of St. Johns Baptist Church and their Director Linda Hall for an evening of glorious singing! The inspiration for the concert comes from Psalm 150: "Let everything that hath breath, Praise the Lord." Tickets are $10 and are available through St. Johns Baptist Church. Chamber Concert One: Spotlight on Strings
Saturday, November 20, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.
This intimate but thrilling concert showcases remarkable music for some of our violins, violas, and cellos. You'll hear orchestra members up close in a string sampler including music from Mozart's G Minor String Quintet, Dvorak's American Quartet, and Kodaly's Solo Cello Sonata. It's a FREE concert in a lovely setting.
This concert will last approximately one hour with no intermission. Free admission; donations accepted.
Earth and Sky
Saturday, December 4, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.
Over a hundred musicians take the stage for Holst’s unforgettable depictions not just of the planets themselves, but the human emotions and passions represented by the gods for which they are named. First, Baltimore Symphony violinist Qing Li joins the orchestra for a ravishing, romantic score based on an ancient Chinese legend, and our marvelous brass and percussion sections shine in Joan Tower’s fanfare.

Peter and the Wolf ... and Friends
Saturday, January 8, 2011 - 12:30 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.
Not only is this a great introduction to the instruments of orchestra for younger students, older kids will enjoy learning more in a fun environment about how music is put together. The orchestra is joined by the marvelous performers of Kinetics Dance Theatre for Prokofiev’s immortal Peter and the Wolf, and kids will love a chance to try out many musical instruments at our Petting Zoo sponsored by Music & Arts held between our two concerts.

Symphonic Pops
Saturday, February 12, 2011 - 7:30 p.m.
Join us for an exciting evening of blockbusters from Hollywood, Broadway, and legendary pop artists! Meghan McCall and Colin Eaton sing selections from My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Miss Saigon, and Phantom of the Opera. Stan Gilmer recreates "Candy Man," "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "Sing a Song" in a Salute to Sammy. Round out the program with a Beach Boys Medley and film music from Up and Superman and you can see why this concert is fun for the whole family!

Concertmaster Brenda Anna, pianist Nancy Smith, and Music Director and cellist Jason Love perform Ravel's First Violin Sonata, Shostakovich's Cello Sonata, and the Second Piano Trio by Mendelssohn. Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez, and the jaw-dropping talent of the virtuosos who win our competition help us complete this exotic journey around the globe.
Chamber Concert Two

A beautiful and varied program featuring highlights from Beethoven's String Trios and "Rasumovsky" Quartets, Borodin's Second Quartet, woodwind and brass works by Madeliene Dring and Francesco Rosetti, plus Bruch's marvelous Octet. This FREE concert is a wonderful way to hear orchestra members up close in the lovely setting of Christ Episcopal Church.
Chamber Concert Three: The Light and the Dark
Saturday, May 21, 2011 - 7:30 p.m.
The enchanting lyricism of Ravel's First Violin Sonata -- discovered long after his death -- opens a program whose emotions range from the tragic to the ebullient! Written shortly before the Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich's Cello Sonata explores dark, intense terrains alongside whimsical dancing in this virtuosic masterpiece. Finally, orchestra members Paul Li, violin, and Robin Strempek, viola, join the Columbia Orchestra Piano Trio – Concertmaster Brenda Anna, violin, Music Director Jason Love, cello, and orchestra pianist Nancy Smith – for one of the great chamber works of all time, Schumann's Piano Quintet.
This performance will last approximately one-and-a-half hours with one 15-minute intermission. Free admission; donations accepted.
Creation and Destruction

Our season finale takes an ecstatic look at the heights and depths of the human spirit. The Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County joins us for Haydn’s exploration of the numinous in highlights from his celebrated oratorio. First, great artists of our time explore how humankind balances its creative impulse against its destructive tendencies.
Sunset Serenade Concert in the Park
Wednesday, June 29, 2011 - 7:00 p.m.
Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and come on out for a fun-filled, free concert for the entire family. Enjoy music from Hollywood blockbuster films like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean, and lots of other pops classics including Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture!
