Randolph Capone, Bass Trombone
Columbia Orchestra Member Since: 2005
Bass trombonist Randy Capone was born in Syracuse, NY and switched from piano to trombone at age 9 after watching Bob Havens perform on the Lawrence Welk Show. His early teachers included Al Balestra, Jerry Natoli, John Besten, and Bill Harris. He won the NY State School Music Association solo competition for bass trombone in 1985 while playing with the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra. He later studied with Harold Van Schaik and George Osborne at The Eastman School of Music. He’s played with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Utica Symphony Orchestra, the Syracuse Summer Festival Orchestra, the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, the Emory Atlanta Orchestra, and the Regal Brass Quintet. He plays a 1986 Bach Stradivarius 50 B3L with a custom Schilke mouthpiece.
After completing medical school in 1997, he moved to Baltimore and began his surgical training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. When not playing bass trombone, he is likely spending time with his family in Baltimore or is busy with his career as the Director of the Baltimore Center for Facial Plastic Surgery.
