The Columbia Orchestra

Penny Zahn, Viola

Penny Zahn

I began playing in Elementary school over 40 years ago with a public school teacher named Mr. Dyer. I continued playing in the school orchestras until I went off to college where I found that I fit right into the college orchestra, without ever having a private lesson!

The viola sat unused for about 5 years before I discovered a small string group called the Columbia Chamber Orchestra in Columbia, Maryland in 1986. We were small enough to have practice in the basement of the director!

It has been a real pleasure to play with this expanding and continuously improving group. The joy of playing in a full symphony is a treat for the performers as much as for the audience. Enjoy!
