The Columbia Orchestra

Nancy Beth Barr, Bass

Nancy Beth Barr started playing bass in 1982 when the 7th grade music teacher, faced with 40 violins and no lower strings, asked for volunteers. She has been driving a hatchback and enduring the "you should have played the flute" joke ever since.

She studied with Owen Cummings and Bob Barney of the BSO, and the late Roger Scott of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Curtis Institute. It was there that she discovered that there are some seriously fabulous bass players who also take auditions, so she went to college and med school instead.

When she's not pulling a monster sound in the back of the orchestra, she can be found seeing patients and teaching residents at the Franklin Square Family Health Center in Rosedale. Favorite composers include Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and 2 of the 3 B's.
