Jeffrey Soulen, Timpani
Columbia Orchestra Member since: 1992
Timpanist Jeff Soulen began playing percussion in 10th grade when his school band director, needing more than two percussionists in the marching band, ignored Jeff's complete lack of experience and recruited him to play cymbals with instructions to “hit them together on every beat and remember, left foot first.” Enchanted by the magic of making music with friends, he started private lessons and was soon playing with community groups in the Philadelphia area. College brought the opportunity to study with Michael Bookspan of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Fred Hinger of the Metropolitan Opera. He has played steadily with a variety of orchestras since then and enjoys playing occasional freelance gigs as well.
After a 'first career' as a pediatrician, Jeff has practiced psychiatry since 1994. He maintains a full time private practice in Ellicott City.
When not at work or playing music, he is likely be found in the great outdoors with his family and friends or hosting meditation at the Howard County Dharma Group.
