The Columbia Orchestra produces two music competitions, Young Artist and American Composer. For more information, click on the desired link below:
- American Composer Competition
- This is a biannual competition to foster the creation and performance of orchestral music by American composers. The composer must be a U.S. citizen or a ten-year resident of the United States. The work must be unpublished or self-published and have no more than two prior public performances.
- Young Artist Competition
- For almost two decades, the Columbia Orchestra has held an annual Young Artist Competition, attracting the best of the best music students in Howard County. The goal of the competition is to expose students to the competition process, provide constructive feedback on their performance, and to give the competition winners a chance to publicly perform what they have practiced so diligently. Each year, these students audition for a panel of area judges, who select the finest musicians to perform on a concert with the Columbia Orchestra. Past winners include Anna Marie Ahn Petersen, violist with the Philadelphia Orchestra; Katherine Needleman, principal oboist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; and Mark Dubac, clarinetist with the Oregon Symphony. It is open to all students of string, wind, and percussion instruments through 12th grade who currently reside, attend school, or receive music instruction in Howard County.

Since 1992, the winners also receive a cash award from the Shirley Mullinix Memorial Scholarship Fund. Shirley was a talented and dedicated musician and teacher. She was a violinist in the Columbia Orchestra and also played the dulcimer and handbells. Shirley taught in public schools in Montgomery and Howard counties, and taught music lessons privately.
